Licenses — the essentials
- Anyone 15 and older needs a WDFW fishing license. Kids 14 and under fish free.
- Choose freshwater, saltwater/shellfish, or a combo. Annual or short-term 1-, 2-, or 3-day licenses are perfect for trying it out with the grandkids.
- Buy online at fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov or at most sporting-goods stores.
Catch Record Card (free)
Required — and you must record your catch — if you fish for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, or Puget Sound Dungeness crab.
Parking & access
Many WDFW launches and access sites need a Discover Pass ($30/yr or $10/day) or the WDFW Vehicle Access Pass that comes free with certain licenses.
Rules change by water & season
Daily limits, size limits, gear rules and open/closed dates vary a lot from lake to lake and change through the year. Always check the specific water — and WDFW's emergency rule changes — before you head out.
This is a friendly summary to get you oriented. WDFW (wdfw.wa.gov) is always the final word on current limits, seasons and fees.
🇨🇦 Fishing in British Columbia, Canada
Langley's a short hop from the border, and the bite forecast and map work for any spot you search — just set your location to a BC lake, river or bay. Licensing north of the line works differently from Washington, so here's the quick orientation.
Freshwater — lakes & rivers (Province of BC)
- Licensed by the Province of BC. Buy online; annual or short-term 1-, 5-, or 8-day licences are available, and non-residents can buy the same way — you don't need to be Canadian.
- Add a Salmon Conservation Stamp to keep salmon and a Steelhead licence for steelhead.
Tidal / saltwater — the ocean (Fisheries and Oceans Canada)
- A completely separate licence run by the federal government (DFO). Buy it online; day and annual options exist for residents and visitors alike.
- Keeping salmon in tidal waters also needs a Salmon Conservation Stamp.
Kids & families
Youth under 16 generally fish free in both freshwater and tidal waters — but they still have to follow the same catch and size limits, so it's a great low-cost way to bring the grandkids along.
Rules change by region & season
Limits, gear rules and open/closed dates vary by region and shift through the year. Tidal salmon openings in particular can change fast — check DFO's fishery notices the day you go.
A friendly summary only. The Province of BC (freshwater) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (tidal) are the final word on current limits, seasons and fees.
